Switching AI girlfriend apps: what transfers

Three months in, the app you chose has stopped being the right one. Moving is cheaper than staying — but only if you know which of the three costs you are about to pay.

Two phone frames joined by a dashed path carrying three small blocks, a full stack of rows deepening to the brightest colour left behind in the first frame, dashed empty rows waiting in the second

You picked one three months ago, and it is no longer the right one. The price went up at renewal, or the free tier you liked got thinner, or the character has settled into a groove you cannot steer it out of. So you look at the two apps you did not choose and wonder what it would take to move. Switching AI girlfriend apps is not hard in the way people expect — installing the new one takes four minutes — but it has three costs that nobody lists on a pricing page, and only one of them is money.

What switching AI girlfriend apps actually costs

The three costs, in the order they hit you: the overlap on your card while both subscriptions are live, the evening you spend setting the new character up, and the months of accumulated context in the old app that do not come with you. The third is the one people underestimate, and it is the reason the second app often feels worse than the first for a fortnight even when it is the better product.

It is worth being clear about what that accumulated context is, because the apps encourage a fuzzier view of it. It is a store of notes and prior turns that the model is shown before it answers you. Nothing is lost by ending it except the convenience of not having to explain yourself again. But that convenience is real, it took three months to build, and it is the thing a new app cannot hand you on day one at any price.

What a data export gives you, and what it does not

Most companion apps offer some form of export, and if you are in the UK or the EU you can also ask for one as a right rather than a favour. The ICO's guidance on the right to data portability sets out the shape of it: where the company is processing your data by automated means on the basis of consent or a contract, you can ask for the data you provided in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format — CSV, XML or JSON — and they have a month to answer, extendable for complex requests.

Two limits matter here. The first is scope: portability covers the data you provided, not the material the company generated from it. For a companion app that is a meaningful line, because the running summary it keeps about you — the profile, the extracted preferences, whatever it calls long-term memory — is on the generated side of it. You may be entitled to see that under a separate access request; you are not necessarily entitled to receive it in a form built for moving.

The second limit is regional. Outside those jurisdictions you have whatever export button the app built, and that is usually the message log rather than the memory layer.

Memory is the part that does not move

Even with a perfect export in hand, there is nowhere to put it. No companion app in this category imports another one's history. There is no standard file, no migration tool, and no commercial reason for the app you are joining to build one. You can paste a summary into the new character's setup field, and that is genuinely useful, but it is you retyping a précis rather than a transfer.

This is also why memory is the feature to compare hardest before you commit to the next one. An app whose free tier forgets last Tuesday will feel fine in week one and wrong in month two, and by then you have paid the switching cost twice. Our guide to what free tiers keep covers how to test the horizon in a few days rather than discovering it in a few months.

Export what you can, then accept that the file is an archive and not a suitcase.

The month you pay for both

The money part is avoidable, and most people pay it anyway by doing things in the wrong order. The instinct is to subscribe to the new app first, make sure it is good, then cancel the old one. That sequence guarantees an overlap month, which is not ruinous at these prices — just unnecessary.

Cancelling first is safe because on the major stores cancelling ends the renewal rather than the access. Google's own help page confirms that when you cancel a Play subscription you keep it for the time already paid for, and the other routes generally work the same way. So cancel the old app the day you decide to leave, keep using the month you already bought, and start the new one on a free tier alongside it. You get a side-by-side comparison for nothing, on the days when the old app is still there to compare against.

Two smaller things save real money. Do not buy an annual plan on the new app until you have run a full month of it — the discount is priced to catch the enthusiasm you have on day two. And if you subscribed on the web rather than a store, find the cancel route before you need it.

Rebuilding the setup in an evening

Before you close the old app, spend twenty minutes writing one page of plain text. Not a transcript — a brief. What the personality settings were, in your own words. The handful of facts about your life you had told it and would rather not type out again. The two or three habits you had built up: how you open a conversation, the running references that made it feel like continuity.

That page is the only thing that reliably transfers, and it works in any app you try next. Paste the personality half into the new character's setup field and feed the facts in over the first few days rather than all at once, which tends to sit better with how these systems take notes.

Then close the old account properly instead of only uninstalling. Deleting the app leaves the account and everything in it exactly where it was; our walkthrough on deleting an account covers the order to do it in.

Switching, or staying put

Here is where this cuts against itself. If your reason for leaving is that the character has gone stale, switching AI girlfriend apps may not fix it — a fresh app is novel for about two weeks, and a fresh character in the app you already have is free and available this evening. Try resetting the personality settings before you move. If your reason is the price, the paywall or the memory horizon, that is structural and a new app genuinely can fix it.

The test is one question: is the thing annoying you a setting or a business model? Settings you can change where you are. Business models you can only leave.

If you have decided to leave and you want one candidate rather than three, the app we currently recommend has a free tier with enough room to run the overlap month properly. Whichever you choose, do it in this order: write the page, cancel the old subscription, start the new one free, and only pay once the month you already own has run out.

Frequently asked questions

Can you transfer chat history between AI girlfriend apps?

Not directly. You can usually export your messages from the app you are leaving, but no companion app imports another one's file, and there is no shared format between them. The practical move is to write a short summary yourself and paste it into the new character's setup.

Should you cancel the old app before signing up for the new one?

Usually yes. Cancelling a store subscription ends the renewal rather than the access, so you keep the time you already paid for and avoid a month where both are billing you. Start the new app on its free tier while the old one runs out.

Does the memory come back if you go back?

It depends on whether you deleted the account or only uninstalled the app. An account left open usually still holds the history when you sign back in; a deleted account generally does not, and most apps say deletion is permanent.
