You paid for a month, used it for a fortnight, and it is not the thing the paywall implied. The memory is shallower than you were expecting, or the voice allowance emptied in one evening, and now you want the money back. Google also notes that if a refund is issued you lose access to the item, which matters when you are halfway through a month you have paid for.
Apple runs it centrally rather than by a published clock. You sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose request a refund, pick a reason and the item, and wait — Apple's guidance says to allow 24 to 48 hours for an update, and that eligibility varies by country or region. That last phrase is the part people misread as a guarantee. A request is a request, and a reason you give in a dropdown is not a right you are exercising.
Both routes assume something that does not hold for this category: that a day or two is enough to tell whether a purchase was what you thought it was.
The problems in a companion app show up late
The features that decide whether one of these apps is worth a subscription are slow by their nature. Memory is the clearest case — an app that greets you by name on day one can still lose the thread of a conversation you had two weeks ago, and there is no way to test a memory horizon faster than it elapses. Repetition is the same: a personality that felt distinctive in the first twenty exchanges tends to show the edges of its range somewhere in week two. A voice or image allowance quoted per month only bites once you have used it the way you normally would.
None of that is deception, and none of it makes a strong refund case. It is a mismatch between what the tier bought and what you wanted, discovered a fortnight after the store stopped taking requests on the clock.

This is the part that actually saves money, and it happens before any of the above. A refund is a two-day appeal against a decision you will not be able to evaluate for two weeks. A free tier is two weeks of evidence that costs nothing and expires on nobody's clock.
Run the app free for a week or two and write down where it stopped you: the message cap, the point the memory reset, whether voice played once or kept going, how fast a credit balance drained. Ask promptly, in plain terms, and say what happened rather than how you feel about it. You will hear back in a day or two.
And keep the receipt email. It is the fastest way to establish which account was charged, when, and by whom — the three things every support flow asks for first.
Where this advice is too cautious
There is a bias in the argument, so here it is. If you already know this is a category you enjoy and the app in front of you is a reasonable version of it, three weeks of free-tier diligence to protect a single month's subscription is a poor trade — you are spending real time to avoid a small, once-off risk, and the paid tier probably answers your questions faster than the free one does.
The reason to do it anyway, the first time, is that the habit is what transfers. You only have to learn once which limit you personally hit, and after that you can walk up to any paywall in this category and know what you are buying.
