AI girlfriend app data export: what you get

Two apps can look identical in the store and differ completely on the way out. The export is the cheapest thing to test before you pay, and almost nobody tests it.

A tall surface holding five message bars, two solid and three drawn as empty dashed outlines, with a dashed path leading from it to a deep-pink outlined file box that holds only two deep-pink bars

You have two apps installed, a free tier on each, and a decision to make by the end of the week. The comparison you are running is about memory, price and how the character holds a conversation. Here is a check that takes four minutes and tells you something those three cannot: ask each app for an AI girlfriend app data export and see what comes back. One will hand you a file. One will show you a paywall. One will have no way to ask at all, and that is a fact about the company rather than a missing feature.

Why the way out tells you more than the feature grid

An export is a dull button that answers an interesting question: does this company treat your conversations as your records or as its inventory. Everything else on the signup page is copy any app can write. A working export either exists or it does not.

It settles two things at once: whether you can leave with anything, which matters the moment you try a second app, and whether you can see what the app holds on you. That is a different question from what it shows you in the chat window.

Memory and price are claims. An export is a file, or it is nothing.

Three shapes an export comes in

Asking for your data lands in one of three places, each with a different cost.

  • A button in settings. Labelled export, download my data or request my data. It either mails you a link or produces a file directly. Best case, and the rarest.
  • A paid-tier feature. Some apps put the transcript download behind the subscription, on the reasonable-sounding logic that it is a power-user tool. The effect: you cannot judge the exit until you have paid for the entrance.
  • An email address, or silence. No button anywhere, and a policy that names a contact for data requests. That route works, as below, but it runs on a clock measured in weeks.

Find out which one you face on day one of a free tier, not on day sixty. It is one of the few signals here that cannot be dressed up.

What an AI girlfriend app data export actually contains

When a file does arrive, expect less than the whole of what you remember. The transcript is the part companies ship most reliably; the things built on top of it tend to stay behind.

Two file boxes side by side, the left one outlined in deep pink holding four neat structured rows, the right one muted and holding a single flat solid block with a small circle crossed by a diagonal slash beneath it
a file you can reopen somewhere else, and a file you can only look at

What usually comes: the message log, account details, purchase records, often a list of settings. What usually does not: the character's long-term memory in any usable form, the personality configuration as the app stores it internally, and generated images or voice clips, often treated as separate media rather than part of your record.

Format decides whether the file is useful or merely reassuring. A structured file can be searched and read years later; a PDF of your conversations is a picture of your data. European regulators are explicit about this for the portability right: the EDPB's guidance for small businesses names XML, JSON and CSV as formats that let you reuse the data, and says a PDF is not sufficient. Apply that test to anything you are handed. Then check the detail most people miss: whether the file holds what the app inferred about you, or only what you typed. The second is a transcript. The first is the record.

When there is no button

If the app offers nothing, you are on the slower route, not a dead end. In the UK and the EU you can ask the company directly for a copy of your personal data, and it has to answer. The ICO sets out the UK timetable: a response is due within one month of the request, extendable by up to two further months if the request is complex, with notice of any extension inside that first month. There is no fee in ordinary cases.

Two limits. Access and portability are separate rights: access gets you a copy of what is held, while the stronger right to receive it in a reusable format covers only data you provided yourself, and only where the processing rests on consent or your contract. And a request needs identity verification, which for an app you joined with a throwaway address is its own obstacle. Outside those jurisdictions the email is a request rather than a right, and the reply is information either way.

Four minutes, two apps, while you are still paying nothing

Run this on each shortlisted app before a card is involved.

  1. Look for the button. Settings, then account, privacy or data. Note which of the three shapes you found, and whether it sits behind the paywall.
  2. Press it. A button that exists is not a button that works. If it mails a link, note how long it takes to arrive and how long it stays valid.
  3. Open the file. Check the format, then check for memory, personality settings, media and inferences. The gaps are the point.
  4. Read the policy. Search it for export, access and portability. A named route with a named window beats a greyed-out button.

Done on both free tiers in one sitting, it is an unusually clean comparison: one of the few places where two apps cannot both be right.

Which reader should weight this heavily

  1. You expect to try several apps. Weight it high. You cannot import the file anywhere, but you can rebuild a character from your own notes rather than from memory, and you will know what each app held.
  2. You want one app, kept a long time. Weight it moderately, as a signal about the company rather than a tool you will use. An app that lets you leave cleanly usually documents the rest honestly too.
  3. You care mainly about what is stored at all. Weight it high, then pair it with the exit: an export tells you what they have, and our guide to what deleting an account actually removes covers the other half.

If you would rather settle this once than audit four apps, the app we currently recommend keeps its data controls in the account screen rather than in the policy.

Where this cuts against the obvious conclusion

The tidy score is that the best export wins. Two reasons it is too simple.

A file of your conversations in a downloads folder is a new copy in a place with no password on it. The company's retention policy no longer applies to it; your own habits do. If you export, keep the file where you would keep a tax return, or read it and delete it. Otherwise the export quietly undoes the care you took over who reads your chat history.

And proportion. An app can ship a neat structured download while opting you into model training by default and keeping the transcript indefinitely. The export tells you about the company's posture, not what it keeps, for how long, or who looks at it. Use it as a tie-breaker between two apps you otherwise like, and as a warning sign when it is missing and the policy is silent too.

Frequently asked questions

Can you download your AI girlfriend chat history?

Sometimes. A minority of companion apps offer a download button in settings, some put it behind the paid tier, and many offer nothing. Check on the free tier before subscribing, because the store listing cannot tell you.

What do you do if an app has no export option?

Email the contact named in its privacy policy and ask for a copy of your personal data. In the UK a response is due within one month, extendable by up to two more months for a complex request, with notice inside that first month. You will usually need to verify your identity first.

Can you move your companion to another app?

No. Nothing in this category imports another app's history or memory, so an AI girlfriend app data export is a record for you rather than a migration file. It gives you the material to rebuild a character deliberately, which beats starting from memory.
